Check cashouts safe?

I need to withdraw a lot of money from UB and Full Tilt. I've been putting it off because of concerns about having checks stolen, etc... but I'm finally going to invest my money and I need to bite the bullet and withdraw. Is it safe to withdraw money via check from UB and FTP? Are there protections to keep someone from making off with my $$$? I'd really rather not withdraw my money in bits and pieces, especially as it sounds like it takes awhile to get checks(I'm in CA, USA).
