syncing tv to surround sound

i just hooked up my tv to a home theatre system but there is a delay in the picture and sound. both items are brand new and i have no idea how to fix this problem any thoguhts?

it seems to be syncing better now--- is it possible that the syncing just takes a few moments???? bedcause it seems to be better

you are not going to get any meaningful answers without:

a) describing which item comes first (ie, is vision delayed or sound delayed)
b) the signal source (dvd? bluray? cable? free to air tv?)
c) your setup in detail (including models and cable details)
