Also massive LOL at blaming McLaren for all this. Clearly he was not the best choice for the job, but the players simply couldn't get it together on the pitch.

Meh, if you rate the players individually (how they play for their clubs) then England are amongst the best national teams in the world.

This is a long-held myth that is partially responsible for the inflated expectation and pressure that surrounds the English national team.

You have no remotely world-class keeper (FWIW, hindsight notwithstanding, I didn't think it was a bad choice to play Scott Carson; Robinson has proved again and again that he's not a top keeper). You have arguably one world-class striker, arguably none. Look who appeared on the field tonight; Jermaine Defoe couldn't *pay* his way onto the Italian, Brazilian, Argentinian, or Spanish *squads*, let alone the pitch. Depth at certain positions is nonexistent; try to name a world-class team Wayne Bridge would ever suit up for.

It's not a myth at all. At our disposal we have:

Beckham: one of the galacticos.
Lampard: a long-term highest midfield goalscorer in the best domestic league in the world.
Gerrard: 2nd youngest CL-winning captain ever

Not sure why I'm even bothering stating this much. We're talking players who are in the first team of some of the world's best club teams. We had 3 teams in the champion's league semi-finals last season (still didn't win- bah). From those teams alone we have Lampard, Terry, Joe Cole, Ashley Cole, SWP, Ferdinand, Neville, Rooney, Hargreaves, Carrick, Gerrard, Crouch. Most of those are first-team players.

That is how you measure how good the England team ought to be. I agree we have no world-class goalkeeper or strikers. Owen is too injury-prone and Rooney has yet to mature.

You're delusional and/or extremely nationalistic... so basically I don't really doubt you are in fact English.

If you watch these players play week in and week out for their clubs you will know they are completely different players than the ones who stepped onto the pitch this evening.

I'll try to address some of the players you mentioned.

With all due respect to Beckham (a fantastic player and leader), his international career is clearly finished. SWP is not a worldclass player by any means, so you're back to the drawing board in terms of finding a right-sided player.

Crouch, despite finding the target with remarkable proficiency for England (all you can ask, really) wouldn't make it onto a world class national team.

Carrick is a fine player, but nowhere near the league of Mascherano, Xavi, or Pirlo, players who man his position for true top class national teams. (FWIW, each of their teams has at least one other defensive midfielder who would walk into the England XI). The same is true of Gareth Barry, who would obviously not find his way into the Argentinian/Italian/Spanish national teams.

Rooney: Part of why he plays so well for United is the foreign legion at his disposal. Receiving service from Ronaldo, Giggs and company must be a nice thing. His struggles scoring for the national team even when fit are well documented, no need to rehash them here.

Also, you can't simply brush off the lack of a world-class keeper or any depth up front. These are things that top class teams generally have, that you do not.

Finally, your contention that the Premiership is the best league in the world is also debatable. Certainly in terms of heaviness at the top, I can agree. But all around? Compare the teams you send to the UEFA Cup with those from La Liga. Blackburn? Middlesborough? We all remember what happened in the final two years ago. The Spanish middleweights are worlds apart. Unfashionable Villareal almost found themselves in the Champions League Final, for crying out loud!
