I got carded at the market buying an R rated DVD.

I'm old (almost 50) and grey.

I just stood there and stared at her.

When she realized I wasn't gonna show ID she finally rang my stuff up and took my money.

When I was 16 (late 60's) I walked into a liquor store and asked for a case of Bud.

Guy goes into the cooler and comes out and places case on the counter,
rings it up, and looks me in the eye and says, "you got some ID?"

I say sure and pull out my wallet and pull my lisense out and hand it to him.

He's still looking me in the eye and says "I believe you" and rings me up.

Here in Brazil it's around 16, or even lower at some places.

you won't get carded most of the time if you

a) go to the same place for all your alcohol
b) grow out a lot of facial hair
c) have a receding hair line

FWIW I work at a lawfirm that does about 85% of the liquor licensing work in CO. We advise our clients to card everybody.

The first time I bought liquor was on my 21st birthday and I didn't get carded. I felt really stupid afterwards. That was in Lubbock, Tx and while the liquor stores only carded about half the time, the bars carded always. But the liquor stores were owned by a select few (dry town, liqour only sold on outskirts) and they had a lot of power.

In Dallas its the opposite. I may not always get carded at a bar but always at a store. And for cigarettes also, which is kind of annoying since I never got carded for them in Lubbock.

I still get carded at the grocery store I've been going to for 10 years and I'm 36. I used to take it as a compliment but now it just sucks. Hey idiot, are you [censored] blind?

Some places (your store sounding like one of them) have super strict policies on this and hassle and basically threaten the jobs of their employees if they don't rigidly follow it, it's not always the employees being stupid IMO, maybe a little nitty though.

Some old guy carded me for a BIC LIGHTHER at a convenience store the other day and I told him to go [censored] himself, I'm 24 and have lots of gray hair.

In general though I get carded at cheap places, not expensive ones. In MA and NH the past few stores I've been in have had "We card anyone looking under 35 signs" up IIRC, which I know for some of them isn't even close.
