Re: Questions about Tunica (not poker specific)
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] 2.) Some people seem to think the food in Tunica is fantastic, and others think it is disgusting. By and large, what does this food consist of? I generally like meaty/fatty foods, but obviously not if it is very low quality. [/ QUOTE ] I'm no Steamboatin' , but.... 1) Grand Casino buffet withstood multiple visits without getting vile. 2) Gold Strike buffet never seemed to please me, but I cannot define why. 3) Gold Strike < Horseshoe < Grand Casino I was actually pretty happy with the tableside food service at the Strike, despite the 2nd hand smoke. Sorry if I held up play, but I was going to fold anyhow. just MHO. [/ QUOTE ] Second hand smoke?? You musta been by one of the entrances. Usually the smokiness there is at a minimum compared to the Horseshoe & Sam's Town. |

While you'll almost never have sombody lighting up at your table (mgmt will stop 'em), the slot machine zone air will find its way into the poker room, and there's often enough smokers to affect the air. It's still cleaner air than any poker joint in Michigan, for example. |

I have eaten at the Horseshoe Buffet on two different trips. The first time, I thought it was highly overated and didn't like the food at all. The second time it was one of the best buffets ever, so there seems to be some variance. I have eaten at the Goldstrike's Buffet numerous times and liked it just fine. I ate at Sam's Town buffet once and was able to pull off the World Famous Seafood Buffet Angleshoot, go in at the end of lunch, eat slow and get fresh hot seafood as they change over for Friday night. YMMV I ate at the Grand's Buffet once and it was well within the acceptable range. |

Re: Questions about Tunica (not poker specific)
Nick:
1. Not used it, but, prolly fine. However, if you want to max out on convenience and you want to visit other casinos, then, suggest renting car. The new I-69 connects I-55, dumping you right at the Grand's front door. This avoids some of the old route's rougher Highway 61 areas north of Tunica. Casinos are pretty spread out across the cotton fields. A private ($$)shuttle exists, never used it & not sure about times etc. 2. The only person I have ever heard that doesn't like the food in Tunica is Daniel Negreanu. I have eaten all over the world, from fancy schmancy redic $$$$ to Made Rites & can assure you it is hard to find food you will not like, and lots of it, in Tunica casinos. 3. Most def both sweet/unsweet - but ask to confirm - drank tons & they make it right (none of that funky stale crap, you know what I am talking about) |

Bally's had a poker room years ago.... [/ QUOTE ] Wow, really? Where? I don't ever remember seeing it. The boat that is currently Resorts had a very small poker room when it was Harrah's Mardi Gras; way back when it was the Southern Belle that room had been a full-table baccarat parlor. As far as I know it's the only place that has ever had a "real" baccarat table in tunica. By the time they closed the "little" harrah's I think they had given up on poker and put a bunch of slots in there. The old Little Harrah's was my favorite boat for dice shooting. It actually looked like a boat, and it was so well-lit that it always seemed clean and cheerful and happy. |

Re: Questions about Tunica (not poker specific)
[ QUOTE ]
1.) I have heard there is a shuttle from the Memphis airport to the casino. Has anyone taken this, and is it an efficient way to get there and back? [/ QUOTE ] If you're going to be there a while, and especially if you're staying at the grand, a car may be worth it. The grand is off by itself, and while there is a shuttle to the Horseshoe, it only runs once an hour and I don't think it's 24/7. [ QUOTE ] 2.) Some people seem to think the food in Tunica is fantastic, and others think it is disgusting. By and large, what does this food consist of? I generally like meaty/fatty foods, but obviously not if it is very low quality. [/ QUOTE ] You'll like it. The buffet at the grand is more than decent. The sports bar at the grand has excellent hamburgers. The buffet at the Horseshoe is much better, though. And the Horseshoe snack bar is HEAVEN if you like meat and fat. ZOMG. [ QUOTE ] 3.) If I order iced tea at the restaurants/buffets, am I only going to be able to get the sweet kind? This may sound silly, but I really don't like sweet drinks, so I order iced tea just about everywhere I am not drinking beer, and have sometimes been frustrated when traveling in the South. [/ QUOTE ] Most places, they'll ask you sweet or unsweet. Some will just assume sweet. But everywhere has unsweet tea, just be specific and you're fine. |
