Default MGM Grand 2-5: Tilting Extreme Short Stack Straddles My Big Blind

This was the first time I encountered this scenario.

The UTG player (in seat 10) has just lost a big pot and is clearly annoyed. He has just $45 left and straddles my big blind for $10. As he pulls his cards in, he stops and says to the dealer "I won't even look". I watched him cap is cards with a chip without looking.

The action folds to the Button who is a loose and weak player. It may have been his first time playing in a casino since he wasn't familiar with some aspects of live play (like chopping blinds). He called the $10. He has a stack of about $350

The Small Blind is a tight and predictable player. His betting actions should indicate the strength of his hand. He called and has about a $300 stack.

I'm in the big blind and look at Q[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]T[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]. I have all players covered.

How do you want to play this hand?

QTo only has 57% equity against a random hand that he shoves... I guess it would depend on whether or not they other 2 players heard that he was going to shove and were planning to do something like limp re-raise.

im still trying to figure out if you want to attack the straddle out of the big blind and force the Button and Small Blind to fold, but to do that would require you to be raising an ammount more than its worth against the straddler with now only $35 bucks. So I say raising PF is pointless, risking a large amount to win $45?

Really, you want the SB to fold and be against the $350 stack if at all possible. QTo is an an awful multiway hand, and OOP i'd say its even worse.

I check the flop and wait to see who calls the straddlers all-in, as i assume this is his intent to see the river if he's not even going to look at his cards obviously, giving you good relative position behind the button and small blind.

If small blind raises, i'd fold.

The only thing i cant decide on is if you have both button and small blind calling, whether to raise at this point and attempt for a heads-up against the straddler now that there could be another $105 in the pot, or to smooth call. You're starting off hoping for at least a straight draw, not mentioning flopping the nuts because that would turn this into a "how to play the flopped nuts" excercise, and i dont think that's the point.

i also want to ask, is it really necessary to even take a shot at this hand? Arent there going to be more opportunities with better starting hands etc to get involved in what is a multiway pot with what I think is a poor multiway hand?

i dont know, im not 2-5 NL player.

Fold or make it $75 to go, dependent on what you have seen from the Button and SB in the past. It is even very likely that the Button and SB don't even know what is going on with the straddle.

You don't want to pay $45 to start playing for $300 stacks, and you don't want to risk $45 to get the money that is in the pot + the straddler's money unless you can fold out the other players.

I would usually just fold here. If it's an unusually tight game I raise knowing I am paying for advertising.

Nothing wrong with folding. QTo is pretty awful. It would be more interesting if you hold T9s.

I decided to call the $5 expecting UTG to move-in for his remaining $35. I thought it was very possible the other two players would fold their hands and I'd be racing with QTo. If either called, I planned to reraise and race with dead money in the pot.

UTG did indeed go all-in. The Button called after a little thought and then the Small Blind called quickly.

I hadn't expected both to call. But, I still went ahead with the limp-reraise. I made it $200 total. That amount seemed like it had the same fold equity as an all-in. But, it also allowed me to move the rest of my money in on any flop just in case they'd fold a no-pair, no-draw hand on the flop.

The Button thought a good long while before folding. The Small Blind was very upset at my big raise when I made it. But, he folded quickly when the action got to him. He said he had AJo.

My QTo was up against the Big Blind's J9o and Queen-high won the pot on a 7,6,5,5,4 board.
