if you are like me and enjoy particular artists across a bunch of different genres, but dislike many of their contemporaries, it can be hard to get a consistently good mix.

my biggest beef with them actually is the way they will play like 5 hip-hop songs, then 5 dance/trance songs, then 5 rock songs, rather than a crazy mix. I guess they are trying to segue all their tracks but it doesn't work for me. Therein lies the problem with loving everything from a capella and bluegrass to xylophone music.

pandora seems to work really well if your tastes fall pretty clearly along genre or time lines. if you are like me and enjoy particular artists across a bunch of different genres, but dislike many of their contemporaries, it can be hard to get a consistently good mix.

i have had some good luck with finding songs or albums that i like on pandora, it's just not a sure-fire thing for me.

yeah that was my problem. I gave thumbs up to a bunch of lil wayne, but then it kept trying to get me listen to every southern rapper, none of whom I like. I wish it could figure out that if I like lil wayne but give thumbs down to the next 20 southern rap artists they give me, maybe loving lil wayne does not equal loving southern rap.

It occurred to me listening to Pandora now that I only thumb down songs i have a strong distaste for, the "meh" ones i just let slide. So i'll post my thumbs down list!

the issues, i think, lie in these facts:

- I like pop music, but not saccharine pop / boy band / girly solo artiste pop

- I like politically informed / protest hiphop, but not the "braggard" forms

- I like dance music and some trance, but not totally insano drum and bass, I'm kind of picky.

- I like some 'classic' bands, but not Paul McCartney. lol. Or the Bee Gees.

that should cover most of the bases.

I'd like to add, of all those songs above, the polar opposite of what i like is the godawful number called "Social Frankenstein". That was utter crappy pap fecking crapsh**e.

however good it feels to be gangsta, I just prefer the Dead Prez / Immortal Technique / Disposable Heroes political hiphop better. Maybe it's an empathy thing - I'm no gangsta, but I do see the political world more that the projects. Especially in the UK, where no projects exist.

I'm also looking for new music all the time.

One good thing I found with pandora is making a new station with a new seed band, so you get a whole new group of suggestions.

I think I have 10+ stations. This is the list from my 2 most listened to.

it's useful to see thumb up / down lists because you can see a "spectrum" - i.e. a hundred bands who are interconnected in some way, namely the compilers prediliction for certain genres.

No need to trash really, horses for courses. That said i think the only one i recognise from yours is lostprophets and i was meh on them. Maybe because I heard they were Welsh.
