Default Jesse May\'s CP blog

Never been to vegas at WSOP time before... for those who have, how accurate is Jesse May's article? Seems like the guy is the ultimate pessimist.

That's the way Jesse writes. Read "Shut Up and Deal" sometime.

I do have great memories of that Stud FT in 2004. I was so close, and played with Ted for about ten hours the previous day (we started out at the same table and were the only two left of the originals; he busted me out). That was the first time I'd really gotten to know Ted, and made a great poker friend.

It comes down to the one thing that is missing the most from the WSOP.......Tradition.

Something has been disturbing me from this years WSOP,and Jesse has hit the nail on the head.It is difficult to have respect when you take competition to the level of circus entertainment. And when you consider this is supposed to be the climax to the poker calendar then something has been lost and it is a shame.
Times have changed and the WSOP is now just another tournament.Gets good tv exposure and benefits poker for it.But what the WSOP had,has now been lost.Tradition,respect,awe,mystery.
Now it is records, number of bracelets, number of participants, prizemoney etc.

Some of you are being too romantic about the past.

The WSOP was created to bring in players for cash games. The first WSOP title was so irrelevent that the players didn't even play the tournament. They voted Johnny Moss as the champion.

This so called glorious event didn't even manage to attract 100 players interested in winning the Main Event bracelet until twelve years after its inception. It didn't get to 300 players interested enough until ten years ago.

The type of degenerate gambling which is being reported about today was just as prevalent many years ago. So were many of the other "problems".

The problem here is between the reporting of the WSOP and some people's romanticizaion of it.

Probably sweating up a storm while cards blow around and pots get awarded to the wrong people, which will probably jog his memory of a time like that somewhere in Texas in 1957 or 1958...
