software that helps/refines your card counting
I have done this but I always lose my count after about 30 min mainly because I either drink or I have too much fun and forget. I'd like to practice it enough so it becomes second nature

Casino Verite is the gold standard of blackjack software. Support is beyond excellent. However, if all you want is something to help you learn to count more proficiently, there are alternatives which are cheaper (and possibly free), but I am not familiar enough with them to make a recommendation.

SmartCards is very nice. Highly configurable but easy to use. Has multiple settings which can be used to increase difficulty. Easiest 'game' is count total. Progresses through static count, running count, true count, and a bunch of other settings. Dozens of counting settins from Ace-Five to Zen.
