I knew a person who was very boastful about how much wealth they had made, had, and were going to make in the future with brilliant business plans. They were lies invented to mask his insecurities about failing at life.

It's very possible this dude is a degenerate gambler who uses the same front to hide his failures from public scrutiny. It also serves as a sweet cover if he doesn't want to pay up roughly $100 after losing a bet: "But I'm rich, I'd never do that". If you remember putting money in the middle yourself, I'm sure he did not.
