Default Softplay by Gobbo? Care to elaborate?

I read Gobboboy's blog and found this post:

I'm going to vomit in terror.

4th in the 35k on stars tonight for a cool $2.7k. Not too bad. There were a few hands that I felt as if I got kind of screwed on, I'll probably post a few of them here or on 2+2 later. A friend of mine got 3rd in it, which was cool, but he was to my direct left and honestly we couldn't help but softplay each other.

I've gotten kind of screwed at final tables lately. Either cold decked or card dead, nothing's particularly gone right. I hope when I final table the main event at Turning Stone, things change.

G'night all.

Gobbo - care to elaborate on the "Couldn't help but softplay my buddy" comment? I'm sure there is a logical explanation - the way it was written just makes it sound a lot worse than it probably was in reality.

I always get a kick out of these types of stories, b/c it always makes me think back to a day where me and one of my roommates called out of work and played tournaments all day.

We absolutely killed each other all day. Screaming insults at each other as we stole and restole each others blinds.

Then again, we did go to college together and our friendship almost ended over a game of Madden during our freshman year.

I think "softplay" was the wrong choice of words. I have played against my brother in tournaments at the same table. It sucks, I don't like it. We don't softplay, but we play extremely straight up against eachother.

I think that's what gobbo was saying here. He wasn't putting moves on Jurollo, nor was Jurollo putting moves on him. Just very straightforward.

I think Gobbo's use of softplay was a little semantics mistake. I was talking with Jur a little during the FT and he hated when Gobbo was on his left or right. Why? Because both of them know the other's game pretty well, thus doing two things. Lowering the possibilities of moves, but also increasing the likelihood one works. I think if either of them had a solid shot to take the other out, both would do it. Again, softplay may have been a poor choice of words. Maybe he means that because Jur was on his left, he couldn't outright steal his blinds. Who knows.

I was watching that table, and they were not going easy on each other. I don't know whether Gobbo was passing up thin pushes from the SB, but I know he doubled through Jurollo at least once, and neither of them had monsters when that happened.

We both talked about this after the tourney in that we didnt want to softplay each other and tried not to (I made a move or two in the right situation), however, we each admitted to passing up opportunities against each other that we may have taken against an unknown villian. A lot of respect was given between each other simply because "I knew he knew" and vice versa.

Was it also a situation where you 2 thought you were better than the rest of the table and didn't want to waste your edges on each other?
