Re: Grammatical Error In Forum
[ QUOTE ]
Two things: -First of all, "their" is not right as an indefinite gender pronoun. Citing "the Dictionary" does not convince me otherwise. -Second, "his or her" is meh. Give me an old-school "his." -Third, come on, it's 2+2. It's not really indefinite gender, it's a guy. [/ QUOTE ] Language is mutable. Changes in usage occur. A true grammar nit keeps up with the changes. It sounds like you [plural form to include OP as well] are arguing that things were so much better before all these irritating kids got a hold of the language and broke it. This makes you a curmudgeon, not an expert. This battle has been fought and lost. You may as well be arguing the "healthy" vs. "healthful" distinction. Besides, this usage isn't even new. It is centuries old. When a singular noun does not refer to a specific individual, it can acceptably be replaced with a plural pronoun. You may not like it. You may think it sounds awkward. You will just have to lump it, however. |

Executive Summary: If you understand what someone is trying to say, its enough... and if you don't, grammer, proper or improper, isn't going to help you. [/ QUOTE ] I may not be able to count, but I know that this is obviously false, particularly as regards the website of a publishing company. (Although this issue would not be in the top 100 of 2+2 grammatical errors.) Skip, It can't be a good sign that you've pegged me as a grumbling old curmudgeon muttering about "those darned kids" when I'm only 23. I'd agree that the rule of "he" as a gender-neutral pronoun is dead, if it ever existed, but singular "they" is the worst replacement. Ick. |

[/ QUOTE ] This is so oversimplified and obviously wrong. You think it would be fine if 2+2 stopped using capitalization and changed all instances of "you" to "u" and "are" to "r" throughout the site? Everyone would still understand them, right? Skipbidder, I'm 20, and I agree with Bob. This has nothing to do with age. It doesn't seem like you understand the purpose of grammar. |
