I had to abort reading the rest of the thread because I felt the need to put my two cents in now.

The first film I ever saw DDL in was "Last of the Mohicans." I did not see it in the theaters, I rented it, and upon my first viewing of the videotape (yes it was that long ago) I immediately rewound to watch it again. The combination of DDL with the direction of Michael Mann makes it onto my top ten list of all time. A wonderful acheivement that dealt with an ambigous if too-often regarded original text. James Fenimore Cooper, while being a great writer, wrote a convoluted, difficult to read descripition of this period of time. Yes, great piece of literature, but debatable.

My take on this trailer is that PTA has taken the style and vision of Punch Drunk Love and attributed it to this film. I think most people will be taken aback by its starkly artistic attitude - this will not be an ABC color by numbers movie. It will be confusing, it will be stark, and it will deceptively brilliant and excellent.

Side notes: I watched "My Left Foot" for the first time the other day, and fell back in love with DDL. If you haven't watched this film you will be blown away by the performance Lewis evokes. You truly believes he is disabled, not in the way you need to suspend your deisbelief to believe that Jamie Foxx was blind in the Ray Charles bio-flick. Was Foxx's performance wonderful? Yes. Was it deserving over the other nominees? No. Daniel Day Lewis is an acting genious, to be compared to the greats of all time, as Christian Bale will be regarded one day, as I believe him to be a distant and close relation to DDL. The two are the best actors walking the face of the Earth today.

On a minor side note, I saw "The Darjeeling Limited" last night. It was immediately my favorite Wes Anderson film to date. Is he uber-emo? Yes. Is he derivitive and solely reluctant to rely on his personal style? Yes. Is he one of the best writers and filmakers on the planet? An unqualified YES. I LOVED the film, and I highly recommend/urge you to go see it at first chance.

That's all this frustrated writer has to say. Can't wait for this film.

Jay

Of the greats working today

Tier 1
David Fincher, Terrence Malick, Martin Scorsese, Coen Brothers

Tier 2
Spike Lee, PT Anderson, Quentin Tarantino.

Tier 3
Ridley Scott, James Cameron, David Lynch, Paul Greengrass, Ang Lee.

M Night and SS and Nolan are very good.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ridley Scott, Paul Greengrass, and Christopher Nolan are all British, not American. Ang Lee is arguable, since even though he is Taiwanese he makes quintessential American films (The Ice Storm and Brokeback are about as good as it gets in analyzing strictly American cultural sensibilities).

[/ QUOTE ]

And James Cameron is Canadian.

1. This movie looks awesome.
2. Boogie Nights is not particularly good. It's hollow at the center.
3. Eric Schlosser is an Executive Producer?

Can I get a witness?

Can I get an Amen?

You are preaching to the choir, Daniel Day Lewis is an artist of the highest quality.

In the Crucible, which was just ok, there is a scene towards the end of the movie where he was just amazing.

Christian Bale is damn good, probably the best younger actor today, but he doesn't have the range that Daniel Day Lewis has, although he could play more leading men roles than DDL.

This is quite possibly my favorite book of all time. Was horrified when I heard it was being made into a movie.

However, there was an article in Outside that was an interview with the Sean Penn and many people involved. Chris's family was actually involved every step of the way.

Basically, I now have high hopes.

No, not debatable. Allow me to expound:

There have been daring people in the world who claimed that Cooper could write English, but they are all dead now. At least one claimed that Mohicans is a "pure work of art." Pure, in that connection, means faultless---faultless in all details---and language is a detail. I feel sure, deep down in my heart, that Cooper wrote about the poorest English that exists in our language, and that the English of Mohicans is the very worst that even Cooper ever wrote. (paraphrasing Mark Twain.)

pj and others,

You'd probably enjoy this book if you haven't read it already: Rebels on the Backlot

"From Publishers Weekly
New York Times Hollywood correspondent Waxman has written a gritty, truthful study of six boundary-breaking young directors who revolutionized 1990s filmmaking and still represent a refreshing alternative to "cookie cutter scripts and cheap MTV imagery." Her full-blooded profiles introduce Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction), Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights), David Fincher (Fight Club), Steven Soderbergh (Traffic), David O. Russell (Three Kings) and Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich)."

Dude, this movie came and went already. I don't think it's in theaters anymore but the Eddie Vedder soundtrack is still on shelves. Put it on your Netflix queue for when the DVD comes out.
