Re: \"Don\'t visit Europe in August\" - Is this really true?
OP, yeah its true 300 million people all go on vacation at the same time. The entire continent is pretty much a ghost town.
I dunno where they all go but I have my suspicions.... |

Re: \"Don\'t visit Europe in August\" - Is this really true?
I'm from UK and going on holiday for 2 weeks in August because there are only about 15 people left out of the 60 million in UK so I have to.

Re: \"Don\'t visit Europe in August\" - Is this really true?
Thanks vbm. Here's one example of an article that I'm talking about, although I'll trust 2p2 over an article that seems to refer to Europe as a country:
Travel Advice - If you travel in Europe during August, be prepared. During August, most European families head for the shore or other vacation areas, and the entire country slows down for the duration. The vacation exodus that occurs in Europe is epic and should not be underestimated by Americans. During August, in many major European cities, the pace slows and the cities become dull, as a result of the local inhabitants being on vacation. During this period, many museums and stores will be closed or operating on shortened summer hours. Service levels at hotels and restaurants suffer because the entire country is on vacation. Except those poor souls who are waiting on you (and you can imagine that they are not too happy about being there while all of their friends are having a good time). |

Re: \"Don\'t visit Europe in August\" - Is this really true?
SoCal, to be fair yeah there are certain parts of Europe such as Spain and Portugal that 'cut back' a little in July and August. But that would in no way impact any of your activities.
Certainly the UK and all of the countries that dont sit around the med sea it is busness as usual. Enjoy the Rugby and feel free to support england. |

Enjoy the Rugby and feel free to support the Boks. [/ QUOTE ] Supporting England is so 2003. I can't speak for UK or France, but Germany pretty much operates as usual during the summer. Might be linked to the fact that Germans have no idea about service anyway, though. I'd be surprised if there weren't a few extra people hanging around France for the World Cup. The French will still slack and refuse to speak English but at least you won;t be alone in your battle against that. |

Re: \"Don\'t visit Europe in August\" - Is this really true?
Are you guys talking about a different Europe than the Europe I live in or something?
OP: No, you don't need to reconsider anything, just be aware that eastern Europe is quite different from western europe, and I think eastern Europe is depressing. |

Re: \"Don\'t visit Europe in August\" - Is this really true?
I've been living in Italy for seven years now. The first two weeks of August are the holiday period, everyone goes on holiday. Factories shut down. They either go to the sea or the mountains or to resorts in the Red Sea etc.
Mind you, the cities aren't empty, they're full. Full of overseas tourists that is. August in the big cities is normally stifling due to the high humidity. This all adds up to a potent cocktail of tourist heaven. Have fun! |

Re: \"Don\'t visit Europe in August\" - Is this really true?
avoid W.Europe at all costs then. Most people are gone, shops are closed, less dining choices, hot as Hades in many places in July.
