Default Hail Mary Pass Before Halftime

My apologies if this has been covered before or if the answer is obvious, but I can't for the life of me understand why a football team doesn't throw up a Hail Mary pass into the endzone if time is expiring right before halftime.

Can someone please explain this to me? Thanks!

They do, assuming they are not in field goal range and they are in hail mary range.

Some teams are so awful at it that it might actually be negative EV (risk of injury, interception return for a TD, etc). Michigan, I'm looking in your direction.

Seems like they always do this unless they're fairly close to their own endzone. At that point, they're probably too concerned about a sack/fumble going the other way because the hail mary chances are so slim from that far back.

I know in Madden if I'm at mid-field or so I like to do a play-action bomb downfield with time expiring. But I am pretty sure I got blitzed once and my QB got nailed and fumbled it for a defensive return. That was when I realized that it wasn't as +EV as I thought. Now if I do it, I'll usually do it out of the shotgun, but that is too obvious.
