but there are tons of people out there who can learn sweep picking and look like a god.

so, the thing that's amazing about this video is he's playing an oscar peterson piano solo. yes, there are a lot of people out there who can play guitaristic things like sweep picking faster, especially when they get to choose what notes they're going to play. however, this piano solo is considerably more complex harmonically, rhythmically and physically than most things you see "shred" guitarists play.

the impressive thing (to me, anyways), is when you see someone playing something where they don't get to pick the notes .

Most "shred" players like Dream Theater play a lot of notes, but they are just scales going up and down. That has nothing to do with music,

A couple pages back.

I play guitar very casually for fun. Seeing stuff like this makes me never want to play again because I can't even comprehend being able to do anything remotely like that. It's as if we're playing two different instruments.

I think many people (rockers) underestimate the complexity of jazz lines (esp. from another instrument) on a guitar. So, you guys play this line I transcribed the other day while waiting for the doctor, and judge the tech for yourself. This line is from Syzygy just shy of a minute in off of Michael Brecker's self titled CD.

The tempo is ~305 bpm, but you need to swing it, and in order to swing efficiently at 305, you need to be capable of playing eighth note triplets at 305. So, the line isn't too challenging if you played it as straight eighths, but the great players keep swinging at all tempos. So, in other words, if you can swing eighth notes this line at 305, cool. If you want to play it with a rock feel and maintain the difficulty of the line, you need to be able to play it as straight sixteenth notes at 231.
