i had 3 stores and gave 2 distributors all of my dvd business. except for the non-regular orders of shadow lane, raven hill. amx etc, i got everything from them. sell throughs to top shelf. gay, straight, bi, tran. all but bondage, fetish and amx/gm type stuff. my salespeople were the owner or family and i became close with them. they know my tastes and have continued to send me goody boxes with new releases. all top shelf stuff. i get about 3-5 a month, so i'm obviously not getting ALL or even close to a majority of the new stuff. just private, evil angel, hustler and a couple more.

these guys will send it to me as long as i want them. when we sold our stores, the new owners never missed an order with these vendors and still use them exclusively. none of these distributors have websites. strictly physical product.

i heard about the auction. i heard it was a let down from the $$ expected vs. collected.

Nice, I never found the biggest companies (Playboy, Hustler, Private) to be the best for peddling online. Because of that, my strongest relationships are with smaller producers. Playboy eventually teamed up with Adult.com, and I did a lot of business with Adult.com, but dealing directly with Playboy or any of the major brick-and-mortar players was always a huge hassle. I do still get a lot of Christmas cards and the trade publications still come to my door.

That's probably because the really BIG names didn't sell, but I didn't expect them to. Porn.com, for instance, started at a million, got run up to something like six million in no time flat, then everyone stopped bidding. I don't think Porn.com got anywhere near the reserve even at six million or whatever it was (might have been higher). On the other hand, a lot of domains went for way more than they should have. The auction was starting every domain, no matter how lame, at $500 or $1,000 and I think that inflated the perceived value of a lot of the properties. I have domains that DEFINITELY would have sold for $15,000+ at that acution even though they probably wouldn't bring more than $1K or so on the open market under normal circumstances.

The auction was still a lot of fun, though, and the auctioneer was a great sport about it; he even cracked a joke or two at his own expense and the weirdness of the situation.

OK, here are some of the bids and sales from the auction:
Blow.com went to $30,000 but did not sell.
Boob.com went to $70,000 with no sale.
BDSM.com sold for $295,000.
Shemale.com sold for $530,000.
SexVideos.com went to $300,000 with no sale.
KinkySex.com sold for $88,500.

Bonus story:
My buddy and I headed to the Mandalay Bay for day two of the convention and, not thinking anything of it, I put on my huge convention badge in the parking lot. A bunch of old people get on the elevator and I notice one of them is avoiding looking at me and another other is staring poison daggers right at me. I glance down and see my 4"x6" badge with "PUSSYCASH" on it in HUGE letters. I look up and the old lady is staring right at me. The old lady says, "I'm not even going to ask," and I reply, "That's probably for the best."
