Default Role of Government regarding Gasoline

A bit of a local issue, but hopefully we can still get some discussion out of it.

WI Governor Jim Doyle suspends the minimum mark up on gas

Minimum Mark Up law text

Of note: Gov. Doyle is running for re-election in a few months.

Anyway, the gov't is mandating that gas be more expensive than it needs to be. The law dates back to the 1930's. Is it necessary to stave off the WalMarts from driving out the smaller stations or is it unneccessary interference by the government?
