so this is generally frowned upon i see. Aside from the social aspects, do you see this as beneficial? i could easily just leave the table go cash out and get lunch, come back with 250 buy in and play a diff table

It's not just frowned upon, it is a flat out scummy thing to do, and completely against the rules. It is a pain if you have a very good day and are out of your comfort zone. On my best day in 1/2 NL, I had gotten up to $1250, and had two players with similar stacks on the table. I had to leave because the prospect of playing 600 BB deep spooked me, even though the table in general was still quite good, and for all I knew the other two players were more scared of me than I was of them.

As others have probably mentioned, you can't do that. You can leave and come back, however.

Just ask to go to another table and cash some out on your way... or just have a ton in front of you to bust more people, but please don't rathole

Yes, it is frowned upon. No, it is not beneficial for the good player. There is an advantage in having the table covered. Yes, it is beneficial for the bad player.

[/ QUOTE ]

Huh?

I thought it was pretty commonly accepted that if you're a better player than everybody else at the table you're better off with a big stack.

Going South is a scumbag move that only scumbags do. Take chips off the table and into your pocket during a session and there's a picture of you in the dictionary next to "scumbag".

Besides, from a strategy point of view, don't you want to be the big stack pushing others around? Or a passive weenie who expects to lose big?

It is the same thing, but it's much easier to get away with it at a busy cardroom.

Is it really the same thing? Whenever I played in AC, when I changed the table, I was actually told by the dealers to pocket everything in excess of the max buyin, and they would color me up specifically for that purpose.

That's what he said.
Ratholing is "not beneficial for the good player. There is an advantage in having the table covered."
