Default PSA: Reducing the amount of credit card offers

So for some reason I actually opened one of the credit card offers I got in the mail and noticed a disclaimer that would allow me to block access of my name! A do-not-call list for the credit card companies so to speak.

Just go to www.optoutprescreen.com to get yourself off of the lists. I checked google and it is a legit site ( http://www.fraudguides.com/consumer_optoutprescreen.asp - the first google result).

I apologize if everyone knew about this, but it was news to me.

Awesome find. A caveat, however: it looks like it won't prevent the credit card companies from spamming snail mail once they have your address, but it will prevent them from finding it in the future.

Does anyone have any other ideas how to get companies to stop sending new offers?

It seems that it works the same way that the do not call list worked when it first came out - IIRC, you still got some calls for a while until your name worked its way through.

Go to the 3 major credit reporting agencies and they will tell you how to get on the list to not receive the offers.

FYI, your SS# can be tied to the application. Several years ago, I get my credit report and see a gas credit card I don't have. I call my brother, because I remember him having one, and it was his.

The company said he stole and used my SS#. They sent me the application, and my SS# was not on it, but his. He filled in all his information, but it still appeared on my credit report. They removed it once I pointed this out, but I realized, anyone can fill out the application, and get the card, in their name, but with your SS# attached. I advise everyone to get on the list.
