Default Hunger in America (not hijacked)

Derailed the previous thread to an AC debate. Iron81 posted this, for an article that we can't access anymore.

--------------------------------------------------------

Cliffs notes: Demand on Chicago area food pantries has grown 20% in the last year. People are moving from pantry to pantry trying to find enough to eat. All this time, median real income in Chicago has fallen in the last 5 years.

Analysis: I blame Bush. This is what happens when you cut social welfare programs while giving tax breaks to the rich. People who are trying to earn an honest buck are falling further and further behind. We'll get on the right track when the minimum wage increase gets voted on in January, but its only a start. We have a lot of damage to undo.

---------------------------------------------------------

Barcalounger also posted:

"In accordance with the newspeak at the Agriculture Department, the title of this thread must be changed to "Very Low Food Security in America".

And they have too many kids. Need to consult the Chinese on a one-child policy.

Wait Iron, you say a fed min wage increase will help this, but doesn't Chicago already have a much higher minimum wage? Or am I just thinking of a big box/living wage measure which didn't pass there?

If Chicago does already have a higher min wage, how many of these poor/homeless would be better off if they could work for $5/hr instead of being unemployed?

If I were a starving person on the streets of Chicago, I would really wish I could get a job at Walmart.

Starving in Chicago is a freaking JOPKE. We have an aprox 5% unemployment rate while around 10% of our population is unemployable.
Jobs are easy to get, food is cheap, assistance is everywhere you look.
Tell these leaches to get a job and buy some damn food.

1. Most of the people who are hungry have jobs. Sometimes 2 or 3 of them.
2. Some of the people who are hungry are in that 10% who are unemployable: the mentally ill, disabled, elderly, etc.
3. The artice talks about how that assistance you are talking about is being overwhelmed.

If you aren't smart enough to acquire food in America then your DNA line should end.
