Default Accommodation Opportunity

It bemuses that it seems like a whole bunch of professional poker players are sitting at home when poker should offer a wonderful opportunity to set yourself free.

I'm a pretty mainstream 24 y.o. living in Newcastle, Australia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newcastle%2C_Australia) and have a spare room. Over December - March, we have an average daily maximum of 27 degrees celsius (80F), and I live about 50metres from the beach (http://www.michaeljosem.com/2006/03/...newcastle.html)

So, this southern summer (northern winter) I need a houstmate. I've got what I think is a pretty decent poker setup, which I hardly use during the day since I've got a 9-5 job as well.

So, in short, here's an offer:

You get:
a) opportunity to see a little of the world
b) room, poker setup, broadband, etc.
c) great timezone for poker - US "prime time" runs from about 10am - 4pm Aust time, which leaves evenings free for other stuff
d) avoid northern winter, and enjoy an aussie summer by the beach
e) the opportunity to have a "tour guide" through the major tourist cities of Sydney, Melbourne & Canberra (I travel a heap to those cities)

I get:
a) someone to chat to about poker who I can probably learn a heap from
b) some income to help with rent & costs etc.

Let me know if you reckon this is interesting (I'm already booked out
with a 2p2'er staying from late August through to sometime in November
- exact dates to be confirmed).

regards,
Michael

Decided to look up your site, and found it was a blog. I was about to close it when a couple things caught my eye, so i read a bit more:

snip snip a bunch of crap about iraq and al qaeda that doesn't belong here ... NT

this is actually kind of an interesting possibility for someone so i will ask you not to hijack it by attacking this poster's political leanings. anyone taking him up on the offer should probably read the blog and make sure they are compatible, but really, take this crap to politics.

I'm currently staying with Aujoz. Here's what to expect:

Pros:
Newcastle is a good city from which to explore Australia. It’s close to Sydney and there are cheap flights to Melbourne and the Gold Coast.

The flat is literally a block from the beach. Here are some pictures:

The flat is close to the downtown area. Within walking distance (say ½ mile) there’s a supermarket, several good pubs and clubs, countless restaurants, shops, etc.

The girls are generally hot and they love Americans.

Aujoz is fun and he has tons of spare monitors.

The price is right.

Private bedroom with queen-sized bed.

Newcastle has a thriving music scene.

Winter in the northern hemisphere is summer in Australia.

Australia is currently 14hrs ahead of EST so prime poker time is from 9am to about 6.

There’s a gym several blocks away.

Drinking age is 18. This means either you’re now able to drink legally or that there are more hot girls in bars than you’re used to.

Neutral:
While Newcastle is a decently-sized city, it isn’t exactly NYC.

Aujoz is pretty (politically) conservative but he doesn’t try to impose his politics on me or anything. The subject has barely come up.

Aujoz has a 9-5 type job so he doesn’t go out much during the week. He’s also gone most weekends. This means that when you do go out, it will usually be alone, at least until you can make some friends. Fortunately aussies are friendly and will usually be excited to chat with you if you strike up a conversation. Just remember that their entire perception of the US/Americans is based on movies, MTV, and George W Bush. If you’re the stereotypical OOT poster who is clueless or anxious in unfamiliar situations, this might not be for you.

Cons:
Finding good beer (by American microbrew standards) is almost impossible.

No cable.

There are a bunch of "koala sanctuaries" around Australia.

One, about half an hour's drive south of Newcastle, has koala cuddling. More info at http://www.whats-on-in-sydney.com.au...ss.asp?ID=1649 and http://www.reptilepark.com.au/
