The news nerds are morons. The N&O article is trash and doesn't explain anything. More great journalism by people who spend five minutes of investagating and a cheesy quote to fill up space. I don't get it, 71 people were cited and only $70k in cash taken? Was that what the house had or was it taken off of everyone that was there? I guess it's good that they didn't bust the big game there.
There has been a big push around here to bust local games but mainly b/c of tie ins with video poker machines and when a game becomes too well known. Its a risk we all take each time we go to local spots and you're starting to see some of the good cash games dry up in the eastern part of the state b/c of the pressure.
Usually the rule of thumb is that you're alright as long as no one complains, no strippers (sounds strange but that crosses the imaginary line of when local cops start to care)and no casino games.

A petition was filed with the NC Supreme Court for review in the Durham case.
The only person from Nevada listed was John Jackson.
All the charges filed so far are misdemeanors, the greatest risk for Chris and the others would be having the Feds get involved (See Michael Vick) or either State or Federal tax folks. A former political bigwig was nailed by the Feds for placing illegal video poker machines.
The game was very well known around NC, so well known that I declined several invites to attend the bigger tournaments. The other types of gaming tables could pique the interest of the Feds in the operation which would not be good.

Depends on who you mean by "they". If you mean the arresting agents and PD, then no.

they're not big names, Chris Bell who?, as far as I know he's famous for hitting the buffet, Michael Grazc on the other hand is famous for being a whipping boy of Vietnamese players like Tuan Le, David Pham and JC Tran, they got his number and always spanking him on tournaments.

I've played with Grazc a few times and hes one of few tv pros I've thought was pretty solid
