Default Looking for a Custom Made Suit/Shirts in NYC Garment District

I will be in NYC Friday and Saturday with my family on a sightseeing trip. My wife mentioned that she wants to poke around the Garment District, which is something we haven't done on any of the NY excursions. Of course, my first thought is trying to see if I can find a good deal on a custom made suit or shirts. I am knowledgeable enough to pick out the proper fabric for my needs, but would like to find a place that has good workmanship. I am interested in finding out where 2+2 NYers go to get custom stuff.

So OOT NYers, any advice or recommendations?

Of course, hence my post. I am wondering if there is anything there worth my time or effort.

Just to give a little more background, the highlight of the trip for my daughter will be haggling for fake Gucci stuff in Chinatown.

I can do that in at Boyd's in Philly. I'm okay with paying a $1k if the material is good (looking for higher than 110).

4_2,

my tailor is good. he comes to the east coast about 3-4 times a year, he has clientele in philly and said he'll probably come through in early 2008. sucks for you that he came to nyc last week! PM me for his # for future reference. i love this guy.

in the interim, William Sani who advertises in WSJ and other publications usually comes through nyc. i've gotten a few suits done with him and they fit well but the style isn't really for me. i prefer darted slim fit suits and his tailor [censored] up my order. it looks like it was made for a 40 y.o. money manager.

for easily accessible awesome off-the-rack suits, i'd go with bergdorf goodman; their in-house tailor is insane.

It's not really in the Garment District (which is a pit), but I use a place called Mohan's on East 42nd across from Grand Central. Good fabric collection, good quality, decent prices (suits run between about $800 and $1500, depending on fabric). They take your measurements in NYC, outsource the tailoring to Hong Kong, then do a final fitting/adjustment back in NYC. I don't have the number handy, but you should be able to find it via Google.
