no sound from certain programs

ok so if i fire up itunes i can hear songs perfect, when skype signs on i can hear the sound it makes.. and i placed a test call and can hear fine. the thing is i can't hear any sounds from aim at all, also i can't hear anything through firefox like if i go to youtube or something. any ideas?
