In December I'll be staying at the MGM at the suggestion of a friend who lives in Vegas. Any tips for getting the most out of my ten days there? As for poker, I'll be looking for $4-$8 to $5-$10 limit, some low buy-in nl, and good $70 to $100 range tourneys (with 30 minute levels or better). Is it best to just explore lots of rooms during a first trip to Vegas, or try to run up some hours over the ten days at a couple?

And...what about food? I like light stuff like beans and rice, steamed vegetables. Any good place to get that kind of stuff relatively cheap in or near the MGM? Thanks, all.

Ceasars palace has a $65 tourny at 9:00am and 3:00 pm, 30 min. levels. also the horseshoe has a 10:00 am $50 buy in, 30 min levels, and a 8:00 pm $70 buy in, 30 min. levels. hope this helps. Good Luck.

Other tips:

1) Sternroolz is right - you can get $40 off your room at check out if you meet the minimum play time using a Players Club card. So sign up for that card as soon as you walk in. I can't get a $40 discount off of a free room!

[/ QUOTE ]

OP booked through a third party site, so he won't be eligible for the poker rate. However, signing up for a player's card is worthwhile anyway, for other comps.

It's just easier to walk to Bellagio from MGM then blow 5 bucks on the monorail. Only makes sense in the summer.

[/ QUOTE ]

It's not the 5 bucks, it's the 30 to 40 minutes wasted that he could be playing.

The MGM poker room is about the only one with a snack bar right next door. Most of them are a trek, and it's overpriced when you find it.

It's not a 30-40 minute walk to Bellagio from MGM. Please. Besides, the Monorail drops you off at the back of Paris/Ballys so you're still doing a walk.

One of the things that I remember about Vegas is that the distance between casinos is deceiving. The scale of the place is so big that everything looks like it's just a block away. Thus, walks always end up taking longer than you think they will.

Having said that, it would not surprise me if time to walk to Bellagio v. the time to get there on the monorail is close to even. I found the monorail to be less hectic than navigating the crowds on Las Vegas Blvd., and one arrived every few minutes (I forget whether they come at 5 or 10 minute intervals, but it's quick).

So walking v. riding... you can't go wrong either way.

YES, it helps a lot. Nothing like that in Fla at those buy-ins! Thank you!

I too highly recommend a day out with a car rental and a night downtown. If you are from the east, driving in the desert is like going to the moon. A drive up Mt. Charleston is nice. Death Valley is beautiful, valley of fire etc.
Though the new car rental place at the airport is very efficient and nice, you have to pay a surcharge (maybe 28 bucks or so, can't remember) for the privelege of renting at the airport. Most rental companies have desks in one hotel or another. Vegas has very low rental rates. So shop around the online sites of the major companies and get a car from your hotel or one nearby. You have the added benefit of not having to get back out to the airport and back for the rental too.

Was told by floorman that they could take $40 off of any room rate. I would get the card, go to poker room and ask the floor about your particular situation. Can't hurt to ask.

It's also quicker if you walk. By the time you reach the monorail, you'll be 3/4 of the way to Bellagio.

It's a 35 minute walk from the poker room at the MGM to the Bellagio property.

It's a nice place with a good poker room. I like playing there. Forget the monorail. They'll be tearing it down to sell for scrap metal in a year when all the condo developers go under and they need cash for the soup kitchens. Taking the hooks out of the bar was a good tip because some of them at MGM are hot. Learn the different game rules on the casino floor and don't play at the dumb end of the blackjack pit or you'll get even more ripped off than normal. Watch out for the skanks scooping chips in the early morning hours. Enjoy!
