Default Better DVD players than Windows Media Player

Windows Media Player is not very good. My laptop, which is brand new and has good specs, plays its DVDs in WMP and they are always somewhat choppy. Are there any free programs that I can download that are better than WMP for watching movies?

thanks

I use VLC, it's a lot better than WMP imo and it's free ^^

Also it plays codecs that WMV won't such as x264 (which I use to archive my dvds)

VLC is really solid and I have been using it for some time now.

I don't find its playlist support particularly good though. When you create playlists they are always "hardwired" with exact path descriptions. This might well be beyond their control, but the worst thing is when you add a bunch of tracks to the playlist window it invariably gets many of them in the wrong order. Are people just putting up with these problems or is there a way around them?
