Good post. It's interesting to see what Americans are proud of.

I find it a bit amusing how many people mention American sports, such as "football" (the ball is primarily thrown, not kicked) and baseball (arguably the slowest and least entertaining sport to watch of all time).

Sorry, I just had to get that out.

I'm all for democracy, though.

As a norwegian I'm proud of that we lead the human development index, which measure personal freedoms.

If I was an american I would be proud of the spirit of doing and the gung-ho attitude of making things happen. Maybe a hard thing to see when you live there, but from a bystander perspective it is quite the trait.

HDI measures life expectancy at birth, education/lieracy and GDP per capita. You can argue that these things are crucial for personal freedom, but the index itself does not measure personal freedoms.

Yeah sorry, I meant the human development report. The index only takes out those 3 numbers.

Why would you take pride in something that you didn't work for? Woo my parents [censored] on this side of an arbitary line I swell with pride!

I take pride in the stuff I've achieved not made up stories.

Proud that we were, at one point, the closest approximation of a free society that has every existed in the modern world (on a large scale anyway).

[/ QUOTE ]

When was that?
