Weekend in Philly....
Hey all,
My cousin just took a job in Reading, PA, and I want to go up and visit him this weekend (coming in from DC). Since neither of us know the area well, I'm wondering if any of you guys can make suggestions for some cool places or areas to check out. What area in Philadelphia is equivalent to say, Adams Morgan (DC) or Wrigleyville (Chicago)? Specific suggestions also appreciated. We're all between 22 and 26. |

Re: Weekend in Philly....
Manayunk is kinda like those places. It's in city limits but you'd have to take regional rail/drive to get out there. There's lots of bars and good nightlife type stuff.

Re: Weekend in Philly....
To be clear, I'm mostly looking for fun stuff to do in Philly, as I want to explore the city while I'm up there. I can't imagine there's too much to do in Reading.

My personal favorite is Jim's with Pat's a close 2nd. Jim's has a location on South Street, which is another part of town with lots of bars, music, nightlife, etc. Pat's is located right across from Geno's (those two are probably the most famous Philly cheesesteak places). 2) Manayunk ... like I said, tons of bars, clubs, etc. You can pretty much just wander around town, if you want some particular places, Grape Street Pub often has good local bands, Bourbon Blue is also pretty decent. Manayunk Brewing Company is a good restaurant with lots of homebrew beer. This looks like a good website for doing Manayunk research: http://www.manayunk-pa.com/mpa/bars.asp 3) If the Philly Wings pro lacrosse team is in town on the weekend you're around, that's a surprisingly fun time. http://www.wingslax.com/ 4) There's a ton of culture/history if you actually want to check that out...obv Liberty Bell, Indepence Hall, etc. Franklin Institute is allright and they have the travelling King Tut exhibit right now which is supposedly cool, I'll be checking that out later this month actually. We have a good art museum too. 5) If you want to go out for a really good meal somewhere, pick one of these Stephen Starr restaurants (you'd probably want to call ahead for reservations) ... he owns a ton of great (but pricey) restaurants around town. http://starr-restaurant.com/ |

Re: Weekend in Philly....
Manayunk is fun. I was at the brew Pub last night and it was good.
Go to Pat's or Geno's for a cheese steak (yea they aren't the best of the best, but they are damn good and both are Philly institutions). If you are going tomorrow, this is mandatory; Philly Craft Beer Fest South Street is good to walk around as is the Rittenhouse Square area. The Art Museum and Rodin Museum are top notch. Of course, you can see the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. The web site Philly.com has a list of clubs and other stuff that might interest you. |
