Today is the 59th Anniversary of the UN vote to split Palestine
I gather that the actual state of Israel didn't come to be for a time afterwards, but today is the anniversary of the UN vote. 33 countries voted in favor of the resolution and it apparently was one of the few that both the US and the USSR agreed on. 13 countries voted against it, including pretty much all of the Arab countries (and pre-revolution Cuba, for some reason). Naturally, it seems as the Arab nations were pretty pissed about the whole thing.
This link is for the original article in the New York Times about the decision. |
