And thinking about this more how f'n hard it was and how it felt (to me) like I was freaking sprinting the whole time, I don't think an average (anyone who is not a very good athlete) can do a sub 5 minute mile even with 7 months of training. They just won't have the physical ability to.

Question: in terms of bench pressing. What would a 5 minute mile=in bench press?

2nd way to ask the question: What % of people can run a 5 minute mile compared to what % can bench press x lbs?

My 1st guess would be 400 lbs. Maybe more, but not less.

Umm, you lost me here. Are you saying that people who can run 5 min miles will be able to bench press an absurd amount?

swingdoc I'd say you're wrong about comparing it to a 5k. But yeah 6min mile: anyone can train and do, 5min mile: really [censored] hard and most people would fail.

Sorry, you lost me here. Did you mean my time estimate was off or that you can't approximate one from another?

No. He's saying that the top whatever percentage of people could run a 5:00 mile if they trained regularly. ~Same percentage of people could bench 400lbs if they trained appropriately. I don't lift much at all, so I have no clue if this is accurate.

Not going to happen.

Not impossible. Still, sight unseen I'm betting against him.

[/ QUOTE ] I think he means, what % of americans can run a 5 min mile, and what % can bench bress a certain weight that is equally as hard as a 5 min mile for running I guess.(his guess is 400lbs)

No way you can do this, good luck though.

Also, FWIW I think that middle school track data is from a single elite meet, not from everyone across the US.

That's pretty darn unusual unless you grew up in Kenya . Here's a compilation of last spring'g best middle school track times:

Only 5 kids in the country were 5:00 or below.

Just to play devil's advocate, I knew of almost no good athletes before high school who ran rather than playing a ball sport. The only timed runs I can think of were for presidential fitness tests, and our gym teacher would just record our times and send us off to go play football. I don't think those things even ever got reported

I believe middle school is 7th thru 9th grades. These boys are 15 or younger.

I never ran distances of less than 8K. But I think but can't be sure I was able to run one mile in under 5 minutes when I was in my forties.
My best 10K time(over 40) was 36:18.
Best 10 mile time was 59:34.

Did run a 5:10 mile during a 5 mile race once.
Only it was a downhill mile. Think there was a
300 feet elevation drop.

I think just about everyone cranking out sub 18 min 5k can grind a <5 min mile on occasion. But that is far different than the above case.

7 months is a good length of time, but I'd like to see some indication of running ability before this becomes possible much less at a very high altitude.

No chance you can run a 5 min mile 7 months from now.
