My current roll is $1,700 and I'm wondering when I should start taking shots at 100NL. I've gotten responses from "You should already be doing it!" to "Grind out 50NL to $3,000 then try it out".

What does the brew think?

wait till 3,000--- shots are definately worth it, because of the experience, but at the same time they can really hurt your confidence and make you play less then optimally when you only have ~17 buyins. know for sure that you are crushing 50nl, and then move up. depending on the site you play at, the games will be very different.
