I thought companies loved to give young guys credit cards?
Rent due Feb 1st. Insurance due Jan 31st. No paycheck until Feb. 2nd because HR didn't put me in the database in time. I have had one credit card since I was 18 and it has a $700 limit. I'm leaving on a business trip to the luxurious Mechanicsburg, PA on Monday.
Given my $200 checking account and negligible available credit I decide the best way to address this situation is to get a new credit card. Easy enough. I go to my bank, a few minutes later, $4000 credit limit. That'll do. Now the catch, only $1000 is available until I activate the card. Well, that will cover rent and insurance but still leaves me effed on the business trip. The card won't arrive for 5 to 7 business days. Best case scenario I will be airborne at that point. Ok, I'll wow the customer service lady with my charm and get the card overnighted to me. Me: "Hello, I need money and would like my card." Her: "Ok, since you sound cute I send you a Rush Card, it should take 2 days." Me: "Awesome, thanks." Her: "Oh wait, you're accounts not setup. I can't do it." Me: "That seems odd because I just used the CC number to pay my rent." Her: "You don't have an expiration date." Me: "01/09" Her: "I can't do anything for you until it's set up." Me: "Ok, well what do I need to do to set it up?" Her: "Call back Wednesday." At least there's nothing worth spending money on in Mechanicsburg |

Tone,
When I was your age I was expert at getting myself into these situations. Both of those bills can wait a day, but as others have said, I'm almost positive rent is one of them. |

ED,
There is something like this, but I used it last month because of the whole New Years isn't a real day thing. I don't think they take kindly to 2 tardy months. IMS, No doubt. Of course there are no Chick-Fil-A's within 20 miles. NU, I forgot to add that I tried to increase my credit limit on my current card, and they declined me before I could even speak to a representative. Ouch. |

Once you start law school/med school the credit card offers you start getting are insane, even if you have little/no credit history.
