Default Men Talk as Much as Women?

I've been meaning to make a post about how damn much my wife talks. Specifically, every morning I get what I call "The Dream Report". As soon as she wakes up she must immediately describe to me all of her dreams. I'm assuming this is a common thing women do, since every one that I've woken up with on a regular basis (OK, both of them) has done it. Anyway, then I see this:

This study says that women don't really talk much more than men.

I'm not buying it. The article says that all the subjects of the study were students, but I wonder if other variables are at play: employment, course of study, etc.

Thoughts?

This is one reason why it's a mistake to go gaga over every new study that comes out and take it as if it were definitive or proved much. Studies are a dime a dozen.

I've read plenty of stuff saying that women are more verbally-oriented than men, that this is reflected in their interactions in the working world, that this is a big part of what makes them better at conflict resolution as peace officers, that their SAT scores and high school grades tend to reflect that, etc.

Somebody's gotta be wrong here somewhere. What you pick as most likely true might well have to do with any biases you already have anyway.

Men talk to women less than women talk to men. Women talk to women more than they talk to men. Men talk to men more than they talk to women. On average women talk more to other women than men talk to other men.

There's a George Carlin quote along the lines of

"There is nothing as boring a slistening to someone else describe a dream."

I get the same deal from my girlfriend. "Oh, I had a dream that I was visiting my family in California LOLZ!!! Isn't that funny?" No, it's not. She has boring dreams, and they're even more boring second-hand.
