In 5 minutes of perusing my poker book collection (332 volumes & growing,) found no less than 28 versions of the Hal Fowler tale...starting with Super System & right up through several recent titles.

Fowler is generally considered the worst. Furlong is a wealthy amateur who plays wild. McEvoy is a nitty ABC mid limit grinder. Daugherty is also an ordinary pro who probably got lucky. Varkonyi, Moneymaker, and Gold may be a little stronger than some of those.

There is a history of WSOP final tables by Cloutier and someone.

I have that book, it's called the championship table.

I just checked. Not much info about Hal Fowler, expect that he was a 52-year old PR guy from L.A., the description of the winning hand and a 1997 interview with Bobby Hoff.

What about Matlobi ('90) and Dastmalchi ('92)? I know next to nothing about these two.

Well, Mansour and Hamid have pretty good results.

I believe they are semi-retired now from tournament poker.

I voted Gold, but after watching a short clip of the 1979 WSOP ME, I have to agree with the folks saying Hal Fowler.

Stu set poker back 30 years by reinforcing every stereotype about a card sharp being a drug-addled degenerate gambler too far beyond redemption anywhere save his token "skill". No amount of bracelets could rectify that.
