So after you told the kid you were missing $500, he still tried to take a half-full bucket of coins? Sounds like he's either completely brain-dead or gets off on stealing. Be thankful he's not a pyromaniac I guess.

Personally I think I'd just tell the kid I'm extremely disappointed in him, and leave the life lessons to the parents. If he says something worthwhile maybe then I consider having a heart to heart with him, etc.

1) Kid wanted to get caught.

2) Kid wants attention, isn't getting it from whor mother or psuedo-distant father.
