things you can try:
+Uninstall FT software, restart computer re download & re install +Reset your computer then internet connection (shut down computer, unplug the power cable on your modem and power cable on your router if you have one, then plug back in after about 30 seconds, re power on your computer) +Try unpluggin modem and router, restart then bottom right corner on the task bar where the network connection is right click then disable go to my computer> network connections/ view network connections> right click and Enable or right click network connectioin task bar and click on Repair GL, if it works hit me up for FT sn

Sounds like your roommate is wrong and your firewall is blocking it. That's exactly what it does to mine when I forget to allow it (I'm a nit and never click the "remember setting") so I think that's a problem.
As said, try either a) restarting computer, b) uninstall and reinstall FTP or c) restarting connection. I would do so in that order, a b c. I doubt your connection is the problem because all your other things are fine, computer may just have a problem with something and needs a refresher and your FTP may be so old that it's not accepting the auto update depending on how long ago you played there.
