Unbeatable board

I was playing in a NLHE tourney with some less experienced players. Flop Came 5-5-5, turn was an Ace, and river the fourth 5. Board was unbeatable. I said to the remaining players "split pot". It seemed easy enough for me but some players looked confused. This tourney was moving rather slow and I wanted to keep things rolling, but in hindsight i thought if I was still in the hand i could have went all in and these guys might have folded. No one got mad about me saying anything, like I said they were confused, but I imagine if another experienced player was involved in the hand, he would have a case for me to shut up.

Was i out of line in saying anything about the hand?

Yes. And no one should comment on a hand, whether they're in it or not, while the hand is still in play unless it's heads up in cash or down to the final two in a tournament.

In your case even getting one player to fold increases the payout for the remaining players so your comment may have influenced the action.

Yes. A couple of months ago in Cardplayer magazine, a dealer told of a deal where 6-7 players were in a hand that got checked down as a royal flush came up on the board. He said that as he put the last card down, someone started to say something and he silenced them, then a betting war broke out in which 3-4 people folded!!!

I've seen people fold to those before. But if its my home game, we let the less experienced players know what's going on. We do the same thing when it's a split pot at show down and some one mucks their winning hand.

So I guess it depends on how serious or friendly the game in question is.

Although you would think it would take an idiot not to realize that the board plays, more people are ignorant of this than you think. Thus, you actually shouldn't say anything. It isn't shocking, ever, if people fold in these situations.

It's amazing how often I still find folks in B&M NL1/2 games (and sometimes NL2/5) folding on the river with an unbeatable board. When it's over they look a little sheepish and say "I wasn't sure if 6 or 7 cards play if you tie the first 5 and I couldn't call $300 without being sure". They understood they were folding quads with an ace kicker, or a rainbow broadway, but just weren't quite certain of the rules.

It helps to know the rules of the game you're playing.

Of course sometimes they just don't read the board and don't realize it's gonna be a split pot. I particularly love flipping my cards over and stating "straight" when there are 5 straight cards on the board and having 3 of my 4 opponents fold (that's my personal record...never gotten everyone to fold with 5 players in to the river on a showdown where the board played).

Anywhere but a home game, yes, you would be. If you're playing home poker with some players who don't really get all the rules, I think an experienced player would be a prick for taking advantage of them. In a club or a casino, totally different story.

Thats extremely generous of you to split the pot with a player that folded. We'll explain it to the new guy after the fact. Small price to pay for lesson learned. We will provide a little instruction while a hand is in play if we have a relatively new guy playing a new (to him) game. For example, New Guy is only familiar with hold'em and we're playing Omaha 8. For the first several hands we might remind about having to use two cards or if the board on the turn is all cards 8 or higher we might reiterate whats required to make low.

But my basic advice is to never just muck your cards at the showdown without knowing your beat with 110% certainty so following my own advice I almost always table any hand at showdown.
