Planet Terror - OMG this movie is great!

The 2nd Grindhouse movie came out on DVD, Planet Terror..

All I can say is Robert Rodriguez is one sick brilliant bastard. This movie is the best "zombie gore action" movie ever. Very disturbing, very funny. Its got everything.

This was much more what I thought a Grindhouse type flick would look and be like compared to Death Proof..but that being said it was still [censored] awful...which most Grindhouse flicks probably were too.

Wow, I'd think the opposite. This was full of effects and CGI and modern production value, whereas DP was cheap with a ton of 'talking scenes' that filled the time until we got to 'the good stuff.' No matter which you think is better, DP seemed much more 'grindhouse' imo.

I also have to add this is one of my favourite opening credits ever - just beautifully done and played.

I hear there's talk of Rodriguez remaking Barbarella with Rosie McGowan in the lead - which I actually really want to see. I always thought the original was a bit of a dud, but had enormous potential.

Grindhouse is my favorite movie to come out this year. I liked DEATH PROOF better, but I thought PLANET TERROR was very entertaining.

I think that PLANET TERROR is indicative of how many people view exploitation movies today, rather than how they actually were. PLANET TERROR contains lots of comedic moments where the audience is supposed to laugh at the cheesiness of the the film. Exploitation movies contained plenty of comedic momenets, not all of them intentional, but it was fairly rare for the comedy to intentionally be based on the low quality of an aspect of the film. In fact, much of PT's imagery (like machine-gun legs) seems to be influenced not by grindhouse movies at all, but rather by comic books and comic book characters.

DEATH PROOF is IMO closer to an authentic exploitation movie of the era. For many grindhouse movies, as long as the sex and violence quota was met, the director was allowed to do pretty much whatever he wanted. This lead to some very inventive filmmaking (MS. 45 is a great example of this). DEATH PROOF seems to exist in this exploitation tradition. It had the violence and the car chases (which I thought were quite well-done), but also had plenty of Tarantino-as-auteur moments. So even though DEATH PROOF might not be similar to past car chase movies, it is similar to exploitation movies insofar as how it was constructed.

Whatever the case, I still enjoyed both movies tremendously.
