I love Vegas and if you pick the right part of town the kids part is just fine also.

Again if Limit is your cup of tea, Scottsdale, Arizona > Minn esp if you hate the cold and gloom like I do. But, great people up there, great community, and I had an absolutely wonderful 9 months that I lived there... minus the seasonal depression Jan-Feb.

because of clubs/nightlife? prostitution? i'm quite unaware of the perks of vegas life besides the obvious. i'm a 20-30 yr old who doesn't like to go out much. i feel like i could assimilate in des moines as well as vegas, unless i'm missing something...

I have to vote for KC. Great quality of life. The people are generally very nice. As an ex-East Coaster, I can confidently say there are a lot less [censored]. You can buy a very nice house for not much money. Tons of stuff to do, although the singles scene is lacking. Schools are good, and crime is not too bad as long as you avoid the known high crime areas. Also, the airport is very user friendly, and flights anywhere are not too expensive, so it is very easy to get out of town. It has never taken me more than 10 minutes to get from the curb to my gate.
The poker is a combination of Limit and No Limit. Games are quite juicy, as long as you are patient. Of note, Missouri has a $500/2hr loss limit, which can get annoying if you want to play high stakes.

Um, no. Vegas is a horrible place to raise a family. I grew up in the midwest and after living here a while and seeing how kids are raised here, there is ZERO chance of me raising a family here. Anyone who has their kid's interests before their own would do the same, IMO.

That's certainly overstating the situation. But yeah, teenagers have a raft of special ways to get in trouble in Vegas. The most common reason I hear for why people leave after being here a few years is "my oldest just turned 14". I'm not sure it's possible to grow up to be a sexually and morally well-adjusted person if you spend your teenage years in Vegas.

Vegas schools are kinda sucky, but then so are most schools most places. Not sure Vegas is seriously a worse place for kids 0-12 than any other average sorta place. And OP said he was contemplating starting a family so he has a good long while he can hang out in Vegas before worrying much about his teenage kids.

Anyone know about San Diego? Don't they have a bunch of poker rooms? From what I remember of my brief visit it was a really nice city...

Well as far as LHE is concerned this topic was greatly discussed in this thread

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showfl...part=1&vc=1

The top 5 for mid limit holdem ended up like this

1)LA
2)Northern CA
3)Arizona
4)Minnesota
5)Atlantic City

I live in MN and agree that it is a nice place to live and raise a family and also the games at CP are loose and yummy but I think Phoenix AZ would be the best overall for LHE for many reasons;

1) Great and plentiful LHE at Casino AZ and many others
2) Nice place to live and low cost of living compared to anywhere in CA
3) 5 hours away from Vegas provides opportunity for many road trips out there and great games in CA not that much further away.

I'm really surprised this discussion is still going. I think it's L.A., hands down.

3.5 hours away from Vegas if you don't drive like a nit, ~5 hours from the Bay Area, ~2 hours to San Diego. Most/juiciest games of every city.

If live mid-high level poker produces your primary income, it has to be L.A. I'm not knocking the other areas; I'm sure they're nice; but to me So Cal is the place to be for live poker.

Yeah, but the traffic there if you have to work at a job is just awful I've heard.

I went there a few years back, flew into San Diego, it wasn't even rush hour, but it took me 3 hours to go 40 miles.

I'd hate to have to drive that on a regular basis.
