can i get your thoughts on a car i'm considering purchasing that gets about 10MPG around town?

To each their own. I drove a beater around in high school that probably got around that.

that's an admirable way of looking at things. anyway, back to the OP, i also strongly suggest buying your used car through private sources instead of a car dealership that has a some trade-ins lying around or worse a used car lot.

Can I expect used car prices to drop some as the 08s are coming out, when do they depreciate?

I wouldnt worry much about premium gas for the Si or RSX unless you put on a lot of miles $20k+. Just sit down and figure out how many gallons of gas you go through a year and muiltiply that by 20 cents, it will be a lot lower than you think and my standard responce when people give me crap from premium (acura tl)

Yeah, the gas issue isn't as much as I thought especially when you won't be driving it in excess. Thanks for the heads up.

Another question: Should I be concerned at any point on a used car that there are too many miles on the car considering how old it is? Is there a standard mileage/per year amount to go by?

Why get the Honda civic when you can get more with the Accord. Try a pre-owned Honda, and it will still have a long warranty on it.

07 or 08 Honda Civic Si - I loved driving this car and I'd be willing to pay a bit extra but this is going to make my insurance nutso plus it takes premium gas. Doesn't sound like it's realistic.

I have the Civic SI sedan, '07. My 6 month insurance premium for basic collision is $270... and I'm 27, with a few speeding tickets. It's not crazy expensive to insure, I routinely get 27 mpg, and I'd argue it's the best $20-22k car available. I [censored] love it.

get a used MINI Cooper S or new MINI Cooper

1) best handling car under 80k (except for elise, which isn't daily driver); in fact, it's best handling 4-seater for under 300k

2) cheap insurance even for S as not classified as Sports car

3) top 10 in resale value

4) most fun car that you can buy; so if u want a car for more than just getting from A to B; it's basically an oversized Go-Kart

5) made by BMW, so has luxury car amenities (ie leatherette feels like leather, not vinyl; auto-adjusting xenon headlights, rain-sensing auto-wipers, heated seats/wheel, etc etc; basically almost any option u can get on a 3 series u can get on the Cooper)

6) new Cooper gets 40mpg; used S still gets over 30

7) safe car; good marks for safety, a bajillion air bags, Dynamic Stability Control, strong-ass shell that will keep u safe even if tree falls on roof, etc

basically, test-drive a MINI and then test drive any other car u are looking at (or even a BMW), and u'll feel the difference; even a beamer feels like floating on the road compared back to back with MINI; so if u like to feel like u are driving the car and in complete control, get a MINI

hybrids dont get nearly what they say they do in real world testing. Gasoline engines EPA rating usually isnt too far off, the hybrids numbers are usually 5 to 10 gallons off the mark. Its a marketing ploy/rape.
