You suggested teams pay their players more up front so it "costs them less" in their later and worse years. This makes no sense for the reason I stated.

[/ QUOTE ] A dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow. Every owner and their staff is familiar with this concept, so I think it would be unlikely we will see front loaded contracts. There are situations where back loaded contracts might make sense if the player would accept them (A-Rods was backloaded a little). In the case of the Diamondbacks, they are paying off a ton of deferred contracts from their world series team. If they could find a superstar to fill a gap on the team this offseason who would take less the first two seasons so they can finish paying off that debt, it would make sense.

I think if he had the chance to stay another 7 years he'd take it in a heartbeat. I don't think he's the guy to back away from a challenge and he'd love to go down as a Yankee great. When he finally breaks out of this slump he'll be a total here. Did you see the applause for his first hit today?

[/ QUOTE ] there are a few situations where this COULD make sense, i s'pose. for instance, say for some reason teh team who signs him signs him to a deal like this, and in 5 years or so when arod begins to decline and for some reason the team is out of contention can sell arod without having to eat a gigantic amount of money to help pay the salary.

If Arod stays in New York, he gets more money and the Yankees get a discount. The only way he leaves is if Boras or Cashman do something incredibly stupid, or refuse to negotiate out of spite or some [censored].
