Man-o-man did those prices ever drop. Blu-ray is still kinda expensive though.

even at $99 it still qualifies for 5 free hd-dvds from a short list (pdf link)

the model has been discontinued. wal-mart did an extreme price drop as part of a one-day sale, and while best buy followed suit they were virtually out of stock already. the prices are good only while supplies last, and i expect that they're already gone nationwide. this is a great deal, but a notable one. don't get your hopes up about this being close to everyday pricing unless toshiba decides to gamble even more. the similar replacement model's regular price is $300.

the best deal on a blu-ray player should be a 40gb ps3 for $300 after kickback at sonystyle.com if they're still running the promotion on their credit card.

Is the reason the prices are dropping on some players because blu-ray is where its going to be at? For me, I'm not sure I want to get an HD player when Fox is with Sony.

How in the world did that joke of an article make the front page of avs? That thing reads literally like an advertisement for blu-ray: [ QUOTE ]
Ultimately, of course, with both hardware and software sales tilting in favor of Blu-ray, it’s hard to imagine Blu-ray losing, especially since Disney is starting to release family friendly titles such as “Cars” and “Ratatouille,” which look fabulous in native 1080p, and other hit titles such as “Meet the Robinsons” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl.”

[/ QUOTE ]

Not to mention it's flat out wrong, as the latest NPD numbers put HD-DVD ahead in hardware sales, and this was before the recent price cut(s).

Strange.

if hd-dvd players can be widespread this holiday season around the 100-150 mark, and blu-ray players don't match that, then it could be a tipping point

is there any reason blu-ray can't match that price? is the blu-ray laser much more expensive? ps3 is cheap but sony loses money on that...i don't think i've ever seen a standalone blu-ray player for <$500 before
