simile = sub-set of metaphor

Your mastery of trope is in doubt. Metaphor replaces one with another. Simile is a comparison.

metaphor: He is a deer.
simile: He runs like a deer.

w/o googling, and relying only on my recollection of my freshmen year of high school, a simile is a metaphor. But, in general, dumber people use similes and smarter, more eloquent people use metaphors. At least this is what the teacher seemed to imply.
