Re: Curse of the Colonel (Sanders)

[ QUOTE ] Like Tom Selleck in Mr. Baseball? [/ QUOTE ] Is that movie any good? [/ QUOTE ] I remember liking this when it came out on rentals. But I was like 10. I still recall scenes from this movie to this day, and in context, it's pretty cheesy. Cliff's notes plot: Washed up baseball player learns he's been traded to a Japanese team (in the meeting he pleads not to be traded to Cleveland), goes over and stuggles on the field and fitting into the culture and playing the game in a way that makes his Japanese teammates uncomfortable. Meets a girl who helps him appreciate the culture and he starts succeeding. Threatens to break consecutive home run streak, Japanese team embraces his ability but suddenly has a better "respect" for the game. It's one of those brash-turned-"I see the light" type of movies. Meh. |

Re: Curse of the Colonel (Sanders)
[ QUOTE ]
If you are interested in Japanese baseball, check out You Gotta Have Wa. The cultural differences and the effects on the way they play the game make for a very good read. [/ QUOTE ] I'd actually like to read this book. If Mr. Baseball taught me anything (pause for canned laughter), it's just how interesting and different the game's nuances really are in Japan. The topic is something I've often mulled about in my head, seen in occasional news segments, but not seen in print. |
