What's nice here is I get the reraise in, but it still looks like I have a marginal starting hand, since I reraised an 8 with a 2.

The hand is very nice, awesome raises. One thing I don't understand: why does re-raising an 8 with a 2 make you look weak?

The point is that against an 8 OP could have 762 or something while if he lrr a 6 then his hand would obviously be likely to be a 5 or better.

Exactly... hero's hand could figure to be mediocre but once the 8 bets and it's going to be heads up, he knows he's a favorite, so he raises. In other words he definitely does not need a hand as good as he has to raise there, so when he makes a strong hand his opponent might incorrectly draw dead thinking his hand is not so great.

The cost is a reduction in fold equity, obviously, since his opponent called down drawing to an 8.
