Default When to rebuy in short-stack NL games?

At the local cardroom (Oceans Eleven) the max allowed buy-in for the low limit ring NL games is 40BBs. On one hand you don't want to let your stack get too short - on the other you can't be a nit and reload every time the blinds pass like you can online since I have no doubt that would bring unwelcome attention.

What are peoples' thoughts on when it's appropriate to reload? Down a quarter of a buy-in? A half? Play until it's gone and rebuy (although I can't see that as being a good option)?

I typically don't rebuy in cash games...does that help?

When I play in 1/2NL games with a $200 max here in Vegas, I usually rebuy when I am down to about $100 (half my buy in). However, when I play in a $500 max game (1/3 or 2/5 blinds), I usually don't rebuy until the $200 level approximately.

Rebuying is standard in NL. The swings usually require it every now and then. No one bowls a perfect game every day.

I buy extra chips at the cage and keep them in my pocket. I pull them out a few at a time when needed and add to my stack enough to get back up to the max buyin.

assuming you're a better player than most at the table, always rebuy to the max whenever convenient. you want to have as many chips as you can on the table for when you get a big hand against a fish.

if you're not one of the better players at the table, find a new table.

onaflag's idea of having extra chips in your pocket is a very good one, especially for small-capped NL games.

I do the same. I take 4-5 buy ins and when I get to the casino I get all my money in chips, usually black, then when seated have the runner chip me down. I never pull out cash at the table, only chips if I have to rebuy.

oh, I always buy in for the max and add if I get down to 60-70% of my starting stack.

I have difficulty believing that people won't get a little perturbed if you simply start moving chips from your pocket to your stack. That's not only permissible but it won't cause any grief with the other players?

Would proper protocol be to announce to the dealer that you're adding to your stack to get back to the max?

I've never seen anyone care.

I wouldn't announce anything with chips, only cash.

I am unaware of any rules where I play that require you announce when you add to your stack. Long as you keep under the cap, you're fine, particularly if you're adding "normal" denomination chips to what you've got. Folks can tell at a glance what you have.

But I agree with pig... it'd be courteous to not sneak in five more $100 bills to your existing stack of 2 bills immediately after someone has asked you "how many bills do you have?" If I add to a stack like that, I put the new bills separate for a hand or two so they are obvious, then merge them. But I still don't tell the entire table "HEY EVERYBODY! LOOKY! I'm adding 4 bills here!" Same probably applies to adding a black chip or two to your stack of 7 $5 chips... it'd be easy for someone to miss those. But again, I'm unaware of any rule against it.

No one is paying attention, reload every hand if you want to, just dont go over the cap ever and keep your chips in stacks of 10 or 20 so that the dealer can glance at them quickly

I would just reload after every hand i saw a flop typically until I win my first pot and start building up a stack - its pretty easy to do this if you keep a bunch of greens/blacks in your pocket depending on what game your playing, greens for 1/2 and short 2/5 games, blacks for deeper 2/5 and 5/10+ nl games - i always like a couple $500 chips sometimes also for deeper 5/10 games
