it probably won't, but just put a plastic shopping bag over it anyway to make sure. i'd say disconnect it, but i imagine this is a dorm room, so just cover it up and you'll be fine.

edit: i used to do this constantly in college. a damp towel will work as well.

I got a smoke detector at the top of my basement steps that goes off anytime I broil something steaks/salmon ect. About 4 years ago my basement was the chill spot for a lot of my friends when I still smoked. Me and my friends would smoke cigs and weed (pretty much a party spot) while drinking and doing any other random drugs we were doing at the time and at no point did that alarm ever go off. I say its safe to do.

Some detectors detect heat instead of smoke. Also, I think you need more smoke than your average joint to set off a detector.

Get a vaporizer. If you can't afford a sweet one like a volcano. I know how to build one. let me know if you're interested it costs about 60$ to get all the materials. It doesn't look as baller as the volcano but it uses the same principle design.

My apartment had smoke detectors in the main room + bedroom. I smoked all the time (tobacco + wacky tobacky). No problems for me.

Do the types of smoke produce different heat levels? That's all I can think of.
