Coughlin is not the worst. He is 93-85 and both teams he coached were bad (Jacksonville-expansion team, Giants 4-12 year before he took over) when he took over. He led Jacksonville to the AFC championship in their 2nd season and made the playoffs in years 2-5--compare that to the track records of the browns and texans.

Norv Turner is really bad. Not sure if he's the worst, but he's been awful over a large sample with two teams.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yah, everyone has a short memory.

[/ QUOTE ]

He lost to the Titans 3 times in one year. He couldn't get to the superbowl when he clearly had the best team in football that year. Coughlin has my vote.

Hard to say since we haven't seen enough of Lane Kiffin, Bobby Petrino or Mike Tomlin to make a good decision.

I'm going with Norv Turner. Like Mike Martz, he's better off as a coordinator than a coach. Romeo Crennel is a close second.

Josh McCown does not bode well for Kiffin.

Norv's OC rep comes from Dallas, where he had a HOFer or perennial pro bowler at every single position. He's a huge luckbox to even have any sort of football job.

Yeah I was debating whether it was Turner or Edwards, but Hermie is so bad at every aspect of coaching (except for motivation).

Every OC job he takes over the offense improves dramatically in year one. He is a HORRIBLE head coach, but still a top tier OC

All coaches have their flaws. Prior to Belichick wound up with the Patriots people considered him the worsr coach. Not because of his knowledge of X's and O's, he seriously lacked people skills.

From Wiki

[ QUOTE ]
Cleveland Browns
From 1991 until 1995, Belichick was the head coach of the Cleveland Browns. During his tenure in Cleveland he compiled a 36-44 record, leading the team to its most recent playoff game win in 1994. Based on his performance, many fans in Cleveland think of him as an uncommunicative, dictatorial and arrogant coach who made many questionable moves, including benching and then cutting much-beloved quarterback Bernie Kosar in 1993 in order to replace him with journeyman Vinny Testaverde, a move that sparked great controversy in the area. In Belichick's last season in Cleveland the Browns finished 5-11. In November of that year Browns owner Art Modell announced he would move the team to Baltimore after the season which cut the legs out from under the already struggling team.[1]

[/ QUOTE ]

The next year they hired Brian Billick and won a Superbowl with a team he engineered but could not "coach".

Right now this season I would say Coughlin has done the worst job because it appears his team quit on him.

The Giants players that voted Strahan captain basically spit in Coughlin's face.

[/ QUOTE ]

The people who thought Belichick was a bad coach in Cleveland were/are idiots. He took over a 3-13 team with past their prime players and won a playoff game in his third year (fourth year, escapes me right now) with a journeyman QB. Cleveland fans were spoiled (hahahahaha) by having a stretch of good teams in the 80s and don't realize how depleted and weak the team that BB took over was.

Norv Turner is the worst coach in the NFL.

To be fair, Herm took two teams with no real business being in playoffs there.

As for the teams he's run as OC, he took over the 2001 chargers offense and helped them improve. Well, that and the addition of LDT who took over for 2000 leading rusher Terrell Fletcher and his 384 yards.

In 2002, he took over in Miami and slightly increased their productivity. His addition once again improved their rushing game. Well, that and the addition of Ricky Williams who took over for the 2001 leading rusher Lamar Smith.

In 2006, he got the 9ers job. The previous season the 9ers were 32nd in passing and 17th in rushing for 32nd overall in the league. This was with Ken Dorsey, Cody Pickett, Tim Rattay, and rookie Alex Smith getting at least 3 starts each, not to mention the dynamic rb combo of Kevan Barlow, Maurice Hicks, and rookie Frank Gore.

In 2006, they improved to 29th in passing, 6th in rushing, and 26th overall, which probably had more to do with Smith maturing and the decision to give the ball to Gore exclusively instead of the other 2 replacement level RBs.

This isn't including his time as Dallas OC where he only had Aikman, Irvin, Smith, Novachek (all easily top 5 at their position during their era) and the best OL of all-time.

He's basically had a career of falling ass-backwards into teams that couldn't help but perform or improve and getting credit as an offensive genius. The chargers fit right into that category. Can't knock the guy's job selection.
