Default Casino Windsor (Canada) Advice/Opinions.

Hi folks,

I’m looking for some advice/opinions on Casino Windsor’s poker games.

I’m moving to Windsor in Aug and plan on playing a fair amount of Hold’em at the casino. I’m wondering what you folks can tell me about the quality of the players there, the daily tourney’s, what stakes you find to be the most profitable, if the limit games are better than the NL games etc etc. As far as my playing background, I’m a fairly competent Holdem player. I play in the local poker league; play in a weekly tourney with some pretty decent players and various side games at local bars etc and usually finish in the money. I like the cash games better but play more NL tourney’s. I’ll probably start off at 3/6 limit to get a feel for the play as I understand that the session fee for NL is $6/30min, which sounds pretty steep. I've got some experiance playing at various casinos in Canada, and a few of the Ameristar casinos in the US so I’m used to the casino atmosphere etc, just looking to get some info on what you experienced guys think of Windsor’s operation so I can start prepping my game.

Thanks for any advice you can offer and if anyone has any experiance at any of the Detroit Casino's, please share!

Cheers!

MrChips

*edit* I just did a search and got some great info on the Greektown and Motcity Casino, info on any of the 3 (windsor, greektown, Motorcity) will be greatly appericated!!

I live close to Windsor and have played there a couple dozen times.

They typically spread at least the following: 1-2NL 100MAX, 3-6 limit, and 2-4NL 200MAX every night. 100MAX is the most popular with 3 tables, 2 limit tables and 1 200MAX table.

On busier nights - Thur, Fri, Sat - you can find 5-10 limit, 200min-500max NL, 10-20 limit, (occasionally 10-20 omaha, or round by round Hold'em and Omaha)

Rake is as high as I have seen or heard of anywhere.
NL games are session fee based: $6 every 30 minutes.
Limit games are 10% up to $6.
At least for lower stakes games.
Not sure on the 10-20 game rake ..

100MAX is a shredder - lots of young bold players - on the weekend lots of young american (ie 19 and 20 yrs) who can drink and gamble there. If you are reasonably careful, you can do fine at these tables, even with the high fees. As a rule, if your table isn't seeing a fresh buyin or 3 every 30 minutes, it is cold and you might as well hang it up. Obviously there are a fair number of regular, and relatively solid players in these games as well - taking advantage of the situation I described above.
The 200MAX is only slightly tighter.
On both - the blind size is insignificant - flops usually cost at least 10-12 often around 20 - and still get a couple of callers.
One tip - if you play the NL - since the fees are so high and it is sometimes tough to get started from 100 and build a stack .. is that I always pay the fees out of pocket instead of out of my stack. If you have won a pot or 2 and have say 150 .. and go cold .. the session fees will eat your profits up and put you back in a short stack position. You want to be able to threaten the people that come in 1 time with their 100 to take a shot which is easier to do when you have 150 to their 75 or so.

3-6 and 5-10 are loose as all get out. 3-6 rarely sees less than 6 to a flop. The other maybe 4-6 to a flop depending on the crowd. Both can be profitable, but you will see some horrendous play and get sucked out on. Most players at 3-6 are loose passive - with the occasional LAG. If you can recognize more than 2 decent players at your table, you probably aren't at a very good table. 5-10 is a little more agressive and you will see better players - however it is usually on spread on busier nights and the weekend "tourist" factor plays, so there are still some pretty bad players. I've only played that level 3 times here - so don't have much more than that to go on.

One thing that bugs me is that even the 3-6 plays with mostly $5 chips. In vegas I found that most of the low limit games were almost all $1 chips. It seemed to encourage more action. A number of times I have bought in all whites .. and then had the dealer top up his/her tray out of the pot and replace with $5 to "get some of this white out of here".

If you want to play 3-6 .. turnover on tables is low .. but you can call ahead 258-7878 to get listed. 100max lists are longer, but they burn through at least 4X as fast.

On 3-6 don't be afraid to get a seat change button to get position on the real fishy players. Most times no one else at the table will have a clue what you are doing anyway.

Tourneys - m,w,f - $50+5 up to 60 players. t,th, 100+10 up to 60 players. I think they have a monthly friday for 500 as well. (I might have the days for 50 and 100 mixed up)
I have not played in these since they are only offered at 10AM and never on weekends.

I probably don't have the hours in to say which games are best .. I have had good nights and bad at NL and Limit there. I am up slightly more on my limit play in terms of $ per hour - but I also think my limit game is a little stronger. Often I will sit in a 100MAX until a 3-6 seat comes available, and if the NL is a good table, I'll pass on the seat, otherwise go and play limit. This has been a relatively successful approach for me.

Hope this helps .. see you at the tables.

Wow, thanks for the great reply. You've given me tons of great info, and as I suspected, it looks like I'm gonna start off at the 3/6 limit tables due to the fish factor. I posted the exact same question on pokerforum.ca, and this is by far the best answer I've gotten. Mabye we can meet up at the Casino to discuss our fishing srategies! Thanks again,

MrChips.

Wow! Compared to Greektown this is amazing. Greektown's daily 10am tourney is $100+25 up to 100 players. A pretty rediculous fee if you ask me. And their blind schedule makes it an all in crapshoot after the lunch break with the blinds doubling from 400-800, 800-1600, 1600-3200 etc.

Do you know what the blind schedule is at Windsor by chance?

Ok, I called and asked for myself.... A little easier that way I guess.

25-50
50-100
100-200
200-400
300-600
400-800
500-1000
800-1600
1000-2000
1500-3000
2000-4000
3000-6000
etc etc

I AM NEVER PLAYING IN ANOTHER TOURNEY AT GREEKTOWN. EVER!

Oh, yeah. Another reason not to play at Greektown.

NO TAXES!

Poker there sucks, especially limit. I haven't been in a good while but they could barely get a 5/10 limit game going. And the NL has very low max buyins. High rake, place sucks!

Mr Chips:

You got an excellent review in the first reply and I agree with everything that was said. I have not played in Windsor for six months for these reasons:

1) The staff are retards. My dog can run a better cardroom, while she's pooping.
2) I hate the room. It's like going to "cards night" at the legion.
3) The rake is gigantic and when you are paying for staff who know less about poker than my dog, it really pisses you off.
4) Free cocktails? Ya...just as soon as monkeys fly out of Phil Ivy's arse. You cannot stand to play there without drinking, so pay for them.
5) The games can be really loose and goofy, so you could have a good night, but forget grinding out a living. With the rake, the person who takes the assistant manager's job at McDonalds will earn twice what you earn.
6) It's Windsor. I came within a hour of being born in Detroit and every time I see Windsor on my birth certificate I want to puke. I may have a bias toward Windsor.

If you have NOTHING better to do, then go ahead. Otherwise, get your passport in order and head across the river.

Forgot to mention something: When the Michigan coeds come over and get loaded, that casino rocks. Some of the finest talent anywhere.
